Forest School

What is forest school?

“The best classroom and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky.”

Margaret McMillan ‘Thrive In The Wild

What are the benefits of forest school?

Studies led by the Forestry Commission found that children attending Forest School sessions showed significant improvements in:

  • Self-confidence and independence – taking more initiative and feeling capable in unfamiliar situations.
Social skills – working more effectively in groups, sharing ideas, and showing empathy.

  • Language and communication – expressing themselves more clearly and creatively.

  • Physical development – building strength, balance, and fine/gross motor skills through active play.

  • Concentration and motivation – sustaining focus for longer periods and showing enthusiasm for learning.
  • Environmental awareness – developing a sense of care and responsibility for nature.

These findings have given Forest School credibility within the education sector and helped secure its place in the Welsh curriculum.

Meadowbank's Forest School

At Meadowbank we are blessed with a school site surrounded by large mature woodland, within this wilder area we have been able to develop a bespoke forest school area. We have a shepards hut, muddy kitchen and a large lime tree with large low branches; perfect for climbing, swings and general exploration. We have a fire circle, where we can explore lighting fires, sing songs and take part in more formal learning sessions.

Our Forest School is led by our Forest School Leader Mark Davies.

I have 20 years experience working in the Special School Sector; supporting the teaching and learning of children with Complex Needs, Additional Learning Needs and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties. I practiced as a forest school assistant for 6 years, finally achieving my Level 3 Forest School Leader 9 years ago. Since then, I have practiced as a forest school leader in both school and public woodland settings. I have also gained my paediatric outdoor first aid qualification. I am passionate about supporting children's learning and exploration within the outdoor environment.
