ECLIPS Early Years Outreach
Meadowbank School is a centre of expertise in speech and language education and our Early Years Outreach Team aims to share this expertise, working in 'partnership' with Early Years and Inclusion Service, Early Years Forum, Community Speech and Language Therapy Department and mainstream schools throughout Cardiff. The Meadowbank School Early Years Outreach Team are known as ECLIPS (this stands for Early Communication & Language Intervention Programmes).
The ECLIPS team are based at Meadowbank School, using the very well established Meadowbank resource bank, liaising with colleagues at Meadowbank School and local Speech and Language Therapists.
There are two elements to the ECLIPS Outreach service:
Attention and Listening
This training, for nursery staff, can be accessed by settings through contacting the ECLIPS service itself, or by contacting the specialist teachers in the Early Years Inclusion Team. The training takes place weekly in the setting with a small group of children and a Teaching Assistant for 4 weeks. This aspect of the ECLIPS service helps develop children's attention and listening skills and enables nursery staff to continue to deliver the intervention independently.
ECLIPS 1:1 intervention
This provision offers support to a child, in an early years setting, who is experiencing difficulties with their speech, language and communication. The children are referred to ECLIPS through the Early Years Forum and the Early Years Inclusion Team. The ECLIPS team liaise with the children's community speech and language therapist (if they have one), who set targets that ECLIPS will work on. If no speech and language therapist is involved, a child's targets can be generated from a speech and language screening tool, carried out by many nursery settings in Cardiff. The role of the ECLIPS Early Years Outreach Team involves working with identified children on these targets, giving advice and support and demonstrating/recommending appropriate resources.
The Early Years Outreach provision is currently being led by Nick Naish, the Outreach Teacher and the team includes an experienced Outreach Teaching Assistant: Angharad Farley.
